Ed Leedskalnin, a Latvian immigrant, came to Florida early in the last century and, over twenty years of fanatical work, created in stone his dream of a home and family that he never had. He created it in honor of the girl he loved, who rejected him on the eve of their wedding, when he was 26 years old.

The Castle contains three- and nine-ton gates, reinforced so that they turn on their axis with a slight push, a telescope and a sundial made of stone, accurate to the minute, a heart-shaped table in honor of his eternal love, in the center of which a bush with red flowers, planted by Ed, still grows.

The gift shop at the entrance features a photo of Ed and five articles he wrote reflecting on the cycles of life.
